Nurse Practitioner, Complex Malignant Hematology

Status: Full Time
Program: Durham Regional Cancer Centre
Schedule: 8 hour day shifts

Salary Range: $61.49 - $64.57 per hour

JOB SUMMARY:
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) having a specialty-based focus in complex malignant hematology, will provide leadership and promote excellence in patient /family centered nursing care through expert clinical practice, education, consultation and research. The NP is responsible to: provide direct patient care, coordination of care, discharge planning and the coordination of related community and other resources for the complex malignant hematology patient population; tutor and mentor nursing and other health professional students as appropriate and participate in continuing education activities to integrate the role of the NP in the program and practice settings; initiate, participate and / or lead programs, presentations, publications, evaluations, research initiatives and other system changes to continue the enhancement of interprofessional teams. The NP will work in partnership with hematologists, consultants, nursing and other members of the health care team to provide comprehensive medical assessment, management and education.

Additional accountabilities may be negotiated with the NP and program leadership.

Responsibilities Include:
* Function with a high level of autonomy and expert skill in the management of complex malignant hematology inpatients and outpatients;
* Utilizes a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and advanced level of clinical competence in caring for tertiary level patients;
* Collects and interprets data about the health of the patient to determine a medical diagnosis and treat complex responses of individuals and families to actual or potential problems;
* Conducts in depth comprehensive assessments of complex malignant hematology patients that integrate a wide range of complex information;
* Initiates and evaluates selected medical and nursing therapies within the NP scope of practice, medical directives and practice guidelines;
* Utilizes diagnostic reasoning to formulate a medical diagnosis within the specialty scope of practice and consistent with practice guidelines;
* Collaborates with the physician when determining an acute or chronic diagnosis as appropriate;
* Consults with and refers to other health care professionals and community services as needed;
* Provides formal and informal education to internal and external teams/partners; and
* Participates in program evaluation and reporting requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:
* Current Certification of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class RN(EC);
* Completion of a Post-Master's of Nursing - Nurse Practitioner program with a focus in Acute care for Adults;
* Minimum of five (5) years recent clinical experience in oncology;
* Successful completion of the College of Nurses approved education to prescribe controlled substances required;
* Membership in the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario and the Nurse Practitioners' Association of Ontario (an asset);
* Oncology certification preferred or started within one year of start date of position;
* Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner;
* Ability to produce high quality work while meeting deadlines;
* Demonstrate initiative and good judgment with the ability to multi-task;
* Compliance with confidentiality requirements;
* Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication skills;
* Patient centered service orientation with sensitivity to and appreciation for diversity;
* Excellent decision making and problem solving skills;
* Program planning and evaluation methodology skills required;
* Collaborative approach to clinical work;
* Ability to interpret, apply and communicate relevant policies and procedures;
* Knowledge and proficiency in current evidence-based methods and practices with an emphasis on health promotion and risk reduction; and
* Demonstration commitment to continuous quality improvement.

The terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with the Collective Agreement between the Hospital and the Ontario Nurses Association (RN Bargaining Unit Local 051).
