FUTURE - Lab AssistantFile Number: 15FUTURE16Position: Laboratory AssistantLocations: Oshawa/Bowmanville Position SummaryUnder the direction of the Charge Technologist and/or Manager, the Laboratory Assistant is responsible for collecting blood samples from adults, children and neonates, following proper procedures as outlined in the laboratory manual; performing EKG's; ensuring quality control, maintenance and troubleshooting of urinalysis and other laboratory instrumentation; receiving and preparing specimens for analysis; receiving and plating of Microbiology samples; preparing specimens for send-out to reference laboratories; booking appointments and receiving registered patients; urinalysis testing and quality control; ensuring the cleanliness of equipment in the immediate work area; participating in the student training program, as required; immediately reporting any unusual incidents involving patients which occur in the performance of duties; following established safety and infection control procedures; and performing other related duties as required.Qualifications" Medical Laboratory Assistant certificate from a recognized training facility" OSMT or CSMLS Lab Assistant certification" experience as a Laboratory Assistant in a hospital or medical laboratory setting" Phlebotomy and EKG experience" knowledge of WHMIS" Knowledge of infection control principles and practices" Good keyboarding skills" Physically able to perform the essential duties of the position" Ability to work effectively in a busy environment with frequent interruptions" proven organizational, prioritization, critical thinking, problem solving and teaching skills" excellent communication and interpersonal skills which include sound judgement, exceptional observation skills, compassion and empathy and the ability to foster good public relations and working relationships in a family-centred care environmentConditions of EmploymentThe terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with the Collective Agreement between the Hospital and OPSEU.About UsLearning.
