With five hospitals, four Emergency Departments, a residential treatment centre and more than a dozen community health care locations, Lakeridge Health (LH) is dedicated to providing the highest standard of care and best experience for patients and their families. Lakeridge Health is home to several regional specialty centres, including the R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre, Pinewood Centre for addictions and mental health, and The Shoulder Centre.

Lakeridge Health Emergency Departments see approximately 204,000 visits annually. Approximately 14,000 visits are specifically for mental health and addictions. We currently have an opportunity for two Physician Assistant to join the existing Physician Assistant program at Lakeridge Health.

The successful applicant will provide clinical services under the direct supervision of psychiatrist and ED staff physicians and play a key role in supporting the patient experience. Expected duties and responsibilities will include:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specifically, the PA, Department of Psychiatry, role includes the following activities:
1. Conduct patient interviews and elicit a history that is relevant, concise and accurate to context and patient presentation
2. Recommend medically appropriate investigations using medical directives when appropriate and support the interpretation of results of common tests
3. Provide relevant information and explanations including a proposed treatment plan to the supervising physician, and seeking further direction where appropriate
4. Identify problems or potential problems and communicate with the patient care team including nursing and physicians. This includes patient specific concerns and concerns related to psychiatry operations such as flow and bottlenecks
5. Implement physician approved management plans in collaboration with nursing, patients and their families
6. Initiate consultation requests for specialist services where required
7. Maintain clear, accurate and appropriate records of the patient encounter
reassessments, management plan including disposition plan and patient instructions
8. Prepare psychiatric discharge summary and/or transfer documentation such as discharge referrals and psychiatric visit summaries
9. Provide patient education and counselling on their treatment plan including written instructions where appropriate
10. Act as a clinical and information resource to the psychiatry team including nursing, clerical, residents, medical students, and other members
11. Support handling any patient care related telephone calls from families and other health care providers
12. Participate in rounds, conferences and education sessions as required
13. Perform other related duties as assigned within demonstrated competency

QUALIFICATIONS:

o Graduate of the McMaster or Consortium Physician Assistant Program
o Membership with the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants
o Ability to work with an inter-professional healthcare team
o Passion for Psychiatry/Emergency Medicine
