POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Director, Surgery Program, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) will work as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class RN (EC). The Surgery Nurse Practitioner is a key member of the Acute Care Surgical Service. Working with the inter-professional team and Physician partners the Nurse Practitioner (NP) will provide leadership in specialized comprehensive surgical services acting as a resource to members of the healthcare team and external groups in the process of decision-making, strategic planning and problem solving both directly and through program development and evaluation.
The NP will formulate clinical decisions and develop a plan of care for patients presenting with indication for surgery within General Surgery and other surgical services. They will develop initiatives to meet the needs of patient populations to reduce length of stay, ensure timely access to service, improve patient flow from presentation to discharge, and enhance the patient experience. The NP will participate in continuous quality assurance and improvement activities to optimize the care and experience of patients receiving surgical care.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Acting as a role model and resource for expertise in clinical nursing practice in the area of Acute Surgical Care to members of the interdisciplinary team;
* Providing a specialty-based focus, functions in an extended class nursing role demonstrating advanced assessment skills and sound knowledge of clinical therapeutics to formulate clinical decisions and provide comprehensive patient care for clients with indication for surgery;
* Facilitating interdisciplinary care by participating in regular team meetings, providing a linkage between the patient, members of the healthcare team, and physicians.
* Acting as the liaison with the patient's primary care provider, referral partners and the community to ensure seamless transitions at intake and discharge from the Acute Care Service to community or clinic and facilitating collaboration amongst all partners;
* Participating in implementation and evaluation of continuous quality initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS:
* Current RN (EC) registration with the Ontario College of Nurses, with a Nurse Practitioner certificate in Acute Care or Primary Care;
* Masters of Nursing required;
* Member of the RNAO and the Nurse Practitioner's Association of Ontario;
* Certification in a relevant surgical Nursing specialty (Medical-Surgical/PeriAnesthesia/Orthopaedics/Perioperative) is required, or working towards with commitment to complete within 18 months;
* Demonstrated NP experience and a minimum of 2 years in Surgical nursing required;
* Strong knowledge of, and demonstrated experience in the care of patients of surgical patients;
* Knowledge of hospital nursing functions, current needs in nursing and the health care system, including pathways for surgical patients;
* Demonstrated experience in adult education, health coaching and client self-management and strong case management skills;
* Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and judgement when relating to all members of the health care team including patients and families and demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships with a diverse range of people;
* Demonstrated negotiation and conflict management skills and ability to work effectively within an inter-professional team;
* Proven effective organizational, conceptual and leadership skills and ability to organize workload and establish priorities effectively;
* Demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving skills and ability to exercise independent judgement and to assess situations and address problems efficiently and effectively;
* Motivated self-directed learner who takes initiative and seeks learning opportunities to enhance client care and professional competence;
* Embraces a philosophy of patient and family centered care;
* Demonstrated ability to be flexible, adapt to changing clinical situations;
* Ability to exercise initiative and observe strict confidentiality;
* Computer skills including knowledge of Meditech and Microsoft Office is an asset;
* Must have a satisfactory performance record;
